This medication is used to treat certain types of brain cancer. Temozolomide belongs to a class of drugs known as alkylating agents. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Use in Cancer
Temozolomide is approved to treat the following types of brain tumors in adults:

Anaplastic astrocytoma. It is used in patients with refractory disease that got worse during therapy that included a nitrosourea and procarbazine hydrochloride.
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). It is used with radiotherapy in patients with newly-diagnosed disease and then alone as maintenance therapy.
Temozolomide is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer.

In the United States temozolomide is indicated for the treatment of adults with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme concomitantly with radiotherapy and subsequently as monotherapy treatment;[3] or adults with refractory anaplastic astrocytoma who have experienced disease progression on a drug regimen containing nitrosourea and procarbazine.

In the European Union temozolomide is indicated for adults with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme concomitantly with radiotherapy and subsequently as monotherapy treatment; or children from the age of three years, adolescents and adults with malignant glioma, such as glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma, showing recurrence or progression after standard therapy.
